At Northern Saints CE VA Primary we use the Letters and Sounds tonics scheme to teach our children the basics of reading.
To learn more about Letters and Sounds you can access a very helpful booklet by clicking below
We teach reading by using a mixture of Oxford Reading Tree and other scheme books. The books have been arranged into Book Bands and you can find out more about these by asking our teachers.
Usually, by the end of Year 4 (and sometimes earlier) children have completed the book bands and move onto our accelerated reader programme which incorporates a range of challenging books to read together with a test online when they have finished to check their understanding.
During lessons we also teach reading in ‘guided reading’ sessions. We use a range of high quality texts chosen by our ‘Reader in Residence’ and Seven Stories for Early Years and Key Stage 1. In Key Stage 2 we use Project X supplemented by the Reader in Residence and Seven Stories selection for KS2. The guided reading sessions incorporate a range of tasks, usually focussing on a group of books and different text types e.g. fiction and non-fiction, which change on a regular basis.
