Year Six – Made in Sunderland
Our new topic ‘ Made in Sunderland’ got off to a roaring start when Nissan very kindly loaned us a model of a Nissan Leaf.
How many children can you fit in the boot?
Linked closely to our Science topic of ‘Electricity’ we learned how an electric car is powered. Inspired by Nissan’s futuristic concept and design, we decided that we would like to build our own eco-friendly, futuristic vehicle.
In science we have been learning about electrical circuits and have carried out research into eco-friendly models and designs. We also took the time to research key players in Sunderland’s industry and contacted some major firms such as Nissan and Liebherr to ask if they would support us in our learning. We couldn’t believe our luck when Liebherr said they would come to our school and teach us the skills of their industry. This was a fabulous opportunity to learn about local apprenticeships and job opportunities for the future. From welding to designing, we had a fabulous day! Impressed by our talents and enthusiasm, Liebherr have now asked us to design a digger of the future. They have provided us with a specific design brief and will be coming back into school to judge the winning designs.
This will form our Design Technology project, where we plan to build and design movingdiggers using our knowledge of electrical circuits and the skills we learned during the Liebherr workshop.
We are also writing letters to Mr Saltzer –The Managing Director of Liebherr- to convince him that our design is the best!
Our first half term has been truly amazing, very creative and full of first hand learning opportunities.
“I loved Leibherr. The welding, circuits and the crane contest was amazing ! Definitely a highlight of the term so far ! – Lily
“My main highlights were putting the danseur together and drawing out my own designs ! I can’t wait to go back.” – Mia
“Leibherr was very inspirational ! They said that manufacturing is not just for males – it is also for females. I found this inspiring as it is an option for my future !” – Grace
